Round 2 of the Emerging Nations World Championship took place in wet conditions at St Mary's Leagues Club in Sydney. It was our first opportunity to see Niue, Japan, Poland, Hong Kong, Vanuatu and Japan in action.
Game 1 of the day saw Malta trying to build on their first round victory over Philippinnes as they faced Niue. It was the Pacific Islanders who had the better of the first half exchanges and, somewhat against the odds, led at half-timne by 22 - 6. Malta lived up to their pre-game expectations in the second half as they outscored Niue but were never able to gain the lead leaving Niue as 26 - 16 winners. Malta stay top of the group on points difference. All eyes in this Pool are now on the next game when Niue face Philipinnes
Next up came Japan playing an in-form Turkey. Turkey followed up their opening day victory against Soloman Islands with a 60 - 0 victory over a game but out gunned Japanese team. Turkey now get to sit out Game Day 3 with a really healthy record of two wins from 2 played
Third game of the day pitted two debutants together as Hong Kong met Poland. Game three followed a similar patttern with Hong Kong producing a really game effort but Poland building on their pre-tourmanet hit out against Hungary to record a 62 - 6 victory.
Finally and possibly the most anticipated game of the day in the trickiest conditions, Hungary followed up a narrow victory over Greece with another win in a tight game against Vanuatu. It was the Europeans who got off to the best start heading in to half-time with a 12-0 lead couresy of two tries, a conversion and a penalty. Vanuatu came out in the second half to not only match the lead but with a field goal, headed into the dying minutes with a one point lead only for Hungary to hit back inside the last 5 minutes to steal the game with a try in the corner which was converted from the sideline.
